Why We're Making a Patriotic Wreath
Although I'm Canadian, my mother-in-law is American and from Michigan. And since I love DIY, upcycling, and crafting, I thought this would be a good project for July 4th.
After all, we had a lot of fun with our farmhouse wreath for spring. And I love the warmth and charm of farmhouse decor.
Creating a DIY patriotic wreath is a fun and creative way to celebrate the holiday and bring a touch of rustic charm to your home. And it doesn't cost much.
In fact, you can get most of what you need at your local dollar store. Here's how to make your own.
Supplies Needed

Before you begin, gather all the necessary supplies. Here's what you'll need:
- 2 star wire wreath forms from the Dollar Tree
- 1 package of foam star scatter
- 1 package of decorative shred (or brown moss if available)
- 1 roll of star ribbon (found in the floral section)
- Scissors
- Twine
- Zip ties
- Hot glue gun (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
This DIY Independence Day wreath is actually very easy to make. Older kids could do it on their own. It makes a good hands-on project for a rainy summer afternoon.
Step 1: Prepare the Wreath Form

Start by flipping one of the star wreath forms over so the backside faces up. This creates a basket-like structure to hold the items.
Step 2: Add the Decorative Shred

Fill the inside of the wreath form with the decorative shred. And by the way, you can certainly use shredded paper from your last packing box. Just remember to add a generous amount to ensure the wreath looks full and vibrant.
Step 3: Add Foam Stars

Place the foam stars on top of the decorative shred. To make them more secure, use a hot glue gun and glue them to the edge of the wreath This step helps the stars stay in place, especially if you hang your wreath outdoors.
Step 4: Secure the Top Wreath Form
Place the second wire star form on top of the filled one to create a cage effect. This secures the foam stars and any other items you may add inside the wreath.
Step 5: Use Zip Ties

Use zip ties to secure the two wire star forms together. Make sure they're tightly fastened and then trim the ends of the zip ties for a neat finish.
Making the Bow

Step 6: Create a Simple Bow
Cut a length of the star ribbon and make a simple bow.
Next, wrap some twine around the center of the bow to give it a rustic touch.
Finally, secure the bow to the center of the wreath using hot glue or by tying it around the inside wire. Tying the bow will also work well if you prefer not to use hot glue.
Finishing Touches
Take some time to adjust the placement of the foam stars and decorative shreds if needed. And then make sure everything is securely in place.
Once you're satisfied with the look, your rustic DIY patriotic wreath is ready to hang and enjoy.

Absolutely. While we used traditional red, white, and blue colors for this project to reflect the patriotic theme, you can customize the colors.
