Have you always wanted to try making your own DIY lip balm? I did, and a few years ago, we made our own harvest cider lip balm. The first batch turned out so well we made a second.
If you suffer from dry lips, a homemade beeswax lip balm could be just what you need. Now, you'll find many different homemade lip balm recipes, with ingredients ranging from olive oil to cocoa butter and beyond. And honestly, it's straightforward to swap ingredients or even a few drops of essential oil to change the scent and properties of this natural lip balm recipe.
Follow this recipe precisely the first time, then switch oils or butters, or even add some of your favorite essential oils in later batches.
This beeswax and coconut oil lip balm works very well, keeping your dry lips (and even dry skin around your mouth) smooth and hydrated, especially when living in a cold climate.
Why We Make Our Beauty Products

In our family, we're constantly striving towards more self-sufficiency and natural living. And that extends to our beauty products.
Making our own health, beauty, and cleaning products means avoiding pesky chemicals and preservatives found too often in commercial lip balms. Plus, there's a definite charm in using natural products handcrafted using DIY recipes.
Ingredient List for This Natural Beeswax Lip Balm Recipe

Creating your lip balm is like cooking a simple recipe. You need the right ingredients in the right amounts. Here's what we'll use today.
- Beeswax Pellets: They give your balm its shape and a natural protective barrier for your lips.
- Organic Coconut Oil: It's the hydration hero that'll make your lips feel silky smooth.
- Shea Butter: This ingredient is a skin superfood, providing essential fatty acids and nutrients.
- Raw Honey: A natural humectant to keep your lips kissably soft.
- Vitamin E Oil: It's like the guardian of your lip balm, keeping it fresh longer.
- Ground Cinnamon: For a bit of zing and a natural plumping effect. Feel free to skip if you're not a fan.
Remember, you can swap out ingredients if you need to. You may have different carrier oils or favorite brands of beeswax pastilles, for example.
No pure beeswax? Use soy wax instead. No coconut oil? Sweet almond oil is a great substitute.

Expanding Your Homemade Beauty Arsenal

Beyond lip balm, there's a world of homemade beauty products to create, each with unique benefits. Not only are these items a treat for yourself, but they also make thoughtful, personalized homemade gifts for any occasion.
- Shampoo Bars: Imagine a bar that cleanses your hair without stripping it of natural oils. As concentrated, water-free versions of traditional shampoo, shampoo bars reduce plastic waste and are ideal for travel.
- Peppermint Foot Scrub: After a long day, a peppermint foot scrub can be a revitalizing treat. The granular texture helps exfoliate, while the peppermint leaves a refreshing tingle, rejuvenating tired feet.
- Goat's Milk Soap: This gentle cleanser is a boon for sensitive skin. Goat's milk is rich in fatty acids and cholesterol, which make up a large portion of the skin membrane, aiding in moisture retention. We love goat's milk soaps.
- Natural Sunscreen: With skincare as a priority, a homemade sunscreen with non-nano zinc oxide can protect you without the harsh chemicals in commercial sunscreens.
- Gardener's soap: For those who love to dig in the dirt, gardener's soap is the perfect gift. With natural exfoliants like pumice or coffee grounds, gardener's soap scrubs away soil, leaving hands clean and soft.
Make these items with natural ingredients so you know exactly what's going into the products you're using and gifting. As part of the 2023 Handy Holiday Crafts Series, these crafts are not just fun and fulfilling to make but also serve as eco-friendly, practical gifts that anyone would be delighted to receive.
