OFF GRID LIVING MISTAKES I MADE & WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

Green Curved Line

WHEN WE MOVED OFF GRID FROM THE SUBURBS 10 YEARS AGO I MADE A TON OF MISTAKES. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED, AND WHAT YOU SHOULD DO INSTEAD.

5 MISTAKES I MADE:

1. didn't know off grid systems 2. unrealistic ideas 3. underestimated costs 4.physically unprepared 5. no support network

lack of knowledge

I didn't know the first thing about solar panels, battery banks or generators & had to learn on the fly.

Hauling wood, pumping water, ongoing renovations, gardening, and homesteading mean you need to be in shape.

I was unprepared for the amount of sheer physical labor to keep our off grid home warm in the Canadian subarctic winter months.

I should have been reading up on battery banks long before I depended on one for power.

The more prepared you are before you move off grid, the better.

Online & offline, other people who live off grid offer a wealth of knowledge.

I should have had a support network in place. See my post for a list of resources.

10 years later, I'm glad we made the move to our off grid home. But those first years were tough on me.
