Think Outside Subscription Boxes for Kids: How It Works
Think Outside Boxes is a monthly subscription box for kids aged 7 and up. We started getting them when our youngest was five. And honestly, she loved them. They're really designed for kids to use with parents anyways.
Here's how it works. There are thirteen boxes.
The first month's box is the initiation box. It includes a knapsack which will be used to store all the cool gear that arrives in future boxes. And it also has several other goodies inside. Then each month after that, the child receives a new box full of gear, activities, and enrichment ideas based on that month's theme.
(Note: there are several different subscription options to choose from, including an annual option.)
Think Outside Boxes We've Received to Date
To date, we've received nine boxes. That means this is the ninth post I've written about our Think Outside Boxes - and as a parent, outdoor lover and homeschooling mom, I'm STILL as thrilled with these subscription boxes for kids as I was when we started getting them months ago.
Here are the boxes we've already "unboxed" and the posts and pics for each:
- Think Outside Boxes Initiation Box
- Think Outside Boxes Subscription Box for Wilderness First Aid
- The Weather Box
- Navigation Skills for Kids Box
- Nutrition Box for Kids

Unboxing our Monthly Subscription Wildlife Box
Since we live off the grid in a boreal forest in Canada's subarctic, wildlife is pretty close at hand. As a matter of fact, in the past month, we had a chance to see a mama lynx and her cubs cross the highway near our trail. A few days later we drove through the wild bison protected area in the southern part of the Northwest Territories. Our kids love seeing the foxes, pine martens, coyotes and even wolves and bears (from a distance) that live in our area.
So they were pretty eager to open up these wildlife boxes! Believe it or not, we opened them at about 3:30 in the afternoon. By the time we were done, it was dark out. We're into the short, dark days of winter.
Anyhow, here's what the girls found in their boxes:
- day and night vision field binoculars (perfect-sized for kids' hands)
- bear bell (extremely useful in our neck of the woods and they easily clip to their knapsacks
- waterproof notebook and pencil
- Learn & Live Resource Cards for animal tracking (Daddy LOVES these)
- retractable measuring tape for those animal tracks
- Insect Hunting Suggestion Card
- Things to Do Monthly Calendar and Wildlife Box Bucket List (Momma loves this - so organized)
- The Wildlife Box Activity Guide (once again chock full of amazing facts, activities, games, jokes, suggestions, and educational tidbits)
How Think Outside Boxes Subscription Boxes for Kids Fits Our Family Culture
As a family, our days are spent living, working, and homeschooling off the grid in one of Canada's most remote and harshest environments. We've lived all over Canada in a variety of environments. And our family has always loved spending time together in the outdoors, whether that meant walking city trails in Fort McMurray, Alberta, camping in Ontario's provincial parks, or hanging out by Manitoba's prairie lakes.
Up here in the Northwest Territories, the Think Outside Boxes are more than a fun educational family activity. The gear helps us outfit the youngest kids' wilderness survival kits. And the skills they're learning, such as navigation, finding water, starting a fire, and basic wilderness first aid could save their lives.
Preparedness, self-reliance, and a healthy respect for nature are important values in our family. Think Outside Boxes helps support that.

Sarita I must say the subscription boxes sound fabulous and a great way to enrich your children's lives and learning. Loved hearing about the wildlife in your area. Everybody in the world is different and I like learning how other people live. Must say I'd never cut it in such a cold climate - that's why I moved to Florida in my 20's. I'm hoping you get lots of sunlight despite the cold. Thanks for visiting me!
