Science Lessons and Books About Seeds

    Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

As a homeschooling and homesteading family, we spend a lot of time together learning self-reliance skills. Sometimes, we care for our animals, such as turkey chicks, laying hens, and chickens.

Other times we are foraging northern greens, growing herbs, or learning homestead crafts like soapmaking.

In the winter months, we grow seeds indoors. In the summer, as part of our homestead chores and homeschool schedule, we head out to our garden.

Our indoor and outdoor garden activities grow as our family works to secure our food supply and become more self-reliant.

Gardening with kids offers many opportunities to include a variety of homeschool subjects - especially science.

We look for the easiest vegetables to grow for kids, then give them the responsibility of minding that crop. And yes, we do buy organic and heirloom seeds. We also save our tomato seeds, pepper seeds, and seed potatoes for next year's crops.

And after a busy day in the garden, we head in for reading time. Often, this includes a gardening book for kids, harvest books for kids, or one of these books about seeds for kids.
